GeekRebel to Boycott Japanese Products

I've joined the Facebook Group: "Fuck Off Japan... Leave the Whales Alone!!!!" (despite a few too many exclamation marks at the end).

Japan will be slaughtering more than a 1000 whales this year that will end up in restaurants. They're exploiting a loophole that allows for the killing of whales for "research" purposes.

I intend to boycott Japanese products and I hope that you will too. (It's not that hard and maybe it will make a difference to what your grandkids will think of you one day if there are no whales left.)

Activist Joanne Sidall put together the following list of Japanese products in between beers:

Alpine Electronics Inc http://www.alpine.com/
Asahi Brewery http://www.asahibeer.co.jp/english/
Bridgestone www.bridgestone.com
Brother Industries http://www.brother.com/index.htm

Sega http://www.sega.com/corporate/corporate.php?item=corporate_contact
Sharp http://sharp-world.com/support/index.html
Sony http://www.sony.net/

I know it won't be easy, but instead of getting a Nintendo Wii or a Sony Playstation, opt for an XboX 360. I really don't know what you're going to do if you're planning to buy a camera though... wait a bit perhaps?

If you'd like to do more, you can also join the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

I have been boycotting Japanese products all this year since the start of they whale massacre. Regarding Cameras, why not buy a HP digital. I bought a HP digital camera (of course its made in China but at least not Japan) along with a photo printer just for $99 at InkStop. I was hoping to buy a Honda Civic to replace my aging Civic, but decided to wait till Ford releases the sexy Verve next year. That's going to be a neat little car to have.

You're boycotting the Japanese for whaling and recommending the American XboX instead? America refuses to ratify the Kyoto protocol and is the world's largest polluter. It's very likely your grandchildren will be under water along with the whales if the world doesn't cut carbon emissions.

This seems like a typical case of well intentioned, poorly researched, emotionally driven decision making. It's precisely the type of action that will lead to greater global problems as we focus on the wrong issues.

Rather than boycott Japanese products, why not boycott any imported products which have been air freighted. Or any products not produced in an environmentally efficient fashion. Or why not cut one's own carbon footprint by 10%. Or 20%. Or 50%. Those would be globally significant I think.

Thanks for the tip Sriyantha. I think Kodak is another option?

Callum, Carbon emissions is definitely high on my list and we've already installed a solar water heater as a start. But I believe I have just enough bandwidth to fight both battles.

And yeah, I definitely get a bit emotional when people start killing other forms of intelligent life!

Kodak only makes point-and-shoots. What about Samsung (Korean)? They're the only non-Japanese camera maker that actually makes digital SLRs.....

On the other hand, Xboxes are made in China (not America), which uses sweatshop labor for pennies an hour. Instead, get a super-fast PC for your gaming needs.
